How I do it

Botulinum toxin softens the wrinkles that form with repeated muscle movement. In the consultation, I observe how your face moves, because the goal is a more rested expression, without freezing it. Preventive treatment is done before static lines appear, to help keep expression lines from becoming permanent. Corrective treatment addresses lines that are already etched in.

For crow's feet, I like to say the injection goes from here up, never from here down: the points are placed in the upper part of the area so the smile isn't blocked. In younger patients, I may combine it with a biostimulator specific to the area, which hydrates and stimulates collagen and elastin. If the wrinkle is already deeper, a very fine hyaluronic acid may be needed, one that doesn't add volume and only softens.

Botulinum toxin also treats bruxism, with injections at strategic points in the masseter, the jaw muscle linked to the excessive force of teeth grinding. And if you train hard and feel the effect doesn't last, there is a reason: athletes tend to have greater muscle activity and metabolize the toxin faster. That's why I assess training intensity, time since the last treatment and muscle pattern before planning.

What can happen

The injection may cause small bruises, mild swelling and tenderness at the injection points. There may also be temporary asymmetry, which is reassessed at the follow-up visit, and, more rarely, the toxin may reach nearby muscles and cause a temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow. Response varies from person to person, and the amount, the points and the interval between treatments depend on the evaluation. Pregnancy and breastfeeding should be disclosed before any procedure.
